Born in Boston, raised in Hong Kong, Jakarta, Manila, and educated in England.

Gabriel Nivera's first encounter with photography was in high school, when he photographed the people living in the Payatas garbage dump for a social awareness project. Gabriel continued his photography during his university years, while traveling across Europe visiting friends. After graduating with a law degree from the University of Nottingham, Gabriel decided that a law career was not for him. He returned to the Philippines, where he worked as a photo assistant for a year. Gabriel continued his formal photographic training at the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Massachusetts. He is currently based in Toronto, Canada for the majority of the year where he is a freelance assistant and digital technician. He continues to go back to the USA and Philippines to for private commisions.
